I need a different solution

I understand that VGA/DVI cables are heavy, often stiff and video connections on a modern LCD monitor are typically vertical in nature increasing the chances of the cable falling out. I get that. What I don't understand why we haven't moved beyond the SCREW-IN type of fastener.

On the back of the PC it's not that bad, typically there is room to get your fingers in there and unscrew the little deals and remove the cable. However, on the monitor side of the situation this is NOT the case.

Most often when I'm replacing a users' monitor, I leave the video cable attached to the PC and remove it from the back of the monitor. I do this to minimize the avalanche of personal knick-knacks, lotion bottles, iPod docks, tissue boxes, family photos, etc... Also, to prevent cable unsightliness, the video cable is often attached to inaccessible areas of the desk by at least 3-dozen plastic ties, as it snakes through all the little openings and holes in the desk. So it's just easier to detach all the cables from the monitor and reattach them to the new monitor.

However, It seems that whenever I go to swap a monitor on someones desk, the screws on the video cable have been torqued down, apparently by Hercules in a fit of rage. either that or maybe the previous technician was expecting to swing from the cable at some point, or perhaps use the monitor and cable to retrieve a car from a snowy ditch. Whatever the reason, those screws will not move for anything. What makes it worse is there is almost no clearance to get my fingers in there to turn the screws. I never seem to have one of those little screw drivers with me and even if I did, it's unlikely that there would be enough space to get it in there.

Back in the CRT days it was a little easier because the video cables were arranged horizontally out the back. There was still limited finger-room but if you had a screw driver, you could get it in there.

So now I'm in a position where I need to flip the monitor over in order to see the screws, but the cable is stretched to it's limits because of the plastic ties and because the only hole in the desk is 6 feet to the left of where the user insists on putting their PC (a configuration that allows the user to spend the majority of their day on Facebook without detection). This prevents me from being able to get the LCD in a position where I can SEE the connector.... ARRGGH. Now, I'm kneeling on the floor with my face smashed against the desk, trying to maneuver the monitor and knocking desk crap all over the place. I've got my fingers all jammed in there shredding them on the chewed up plastic covers on those screws from when the last tech tried to use a pair of scissors as pliers to get those things to move.

My solution? Do away with the screws. Make something like a clip, that snaps on, and you squeeze to release. I'm thinking something like those Sub-miniature D 25pin connectors HP was using for a while on their parallel printers. Anyway, it would need to be implemented without asking every video card and monitor vendor to redesign their connectors, but there has to be a way.
